Shreyas Iyer has been appointed captain of the current Mumbai squad playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shardul Thakur was captaining Mumbai, but he was ruled out of the tournament after an injury.
“The MCA is pleased to announce that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the Captain of the Mumbai senior men’s team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy,” the MCA said in a statement on Monday.
His continuation as captain of Mumbai will depend on the fitness clearance from the BCCI for the upcoming New Zealand series, starting from January 11. He was selected as vice captain for the forthcoming ODI series against New Zealand. However, there are speculations that Ruturaj Gaikwad will replace Shreyas Iyer if he fails his fitness clearance.
He was selected for the India ODI and subjected to fitness evaluation. BCCI said his fitness will be evaluated at the Centre of Excellence, and he would only join the Indian squad if cleared. Cricbuzz reported on Sunday that the chances of clearing the fitness test are very strong. The First ODI will start on January 11 in Baroda.
If Shreyas Iyer clears his fitness test and returns to the India squad for international duty, the MCA will have to appoint a new captain for the Vijay Hazare Trophy knockouts.
The MCA secretary, Umesh Khanvilkar, said, “We will take a call once things are clear. Shreyas will lead the team in the remaining two league games.”
Iyer has not played any international cricket since his injury suffered in Sydney, Australia. He underwent Spleen Surgery in Australia. The game on January 6 was his first after three months.
