In the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025, the Mumbai Indians emerged as the title winners. Now, they’ve lifted the trophy two times since the start of the league. MI Women won the inaugural edition of WPL in 2023 and then again in 2025 in front of a near-capacity home crowd at the Brabourne Stadium.
They finished second on the points table and lost both their games to the Delhi Capitals. However, they beat the Gujarat Giants in a one-sided Eliminator. After that, they defeated DC in the final to win the title.
MI Women didn’t look to overhaul their squad in the mega auction. Continuing with the same players has been the secret of their success. They were able to reassemble the core that won them the second title. They spent INR 3 crore for Amelia Kerr and go Shabnim Ismail at just INR 60 lakh.
Players like Saika Ishaque, S Sajana, and Sanskriti Gupta returned to the franchise. These are capped players in their squad. Apart from this, they also got Australian allrounder Nicola Carey and up-and-coming quick Milly Illingworth. They’ve also gone for the up-and-coming domestic players like Poonam Khemnar and teenager Triveni Vasistha.
Mumbai has a settled squad, but they’ve made some changes in the management staff. Charlotte Edwards, their head coach, departed from the Mumbai squad and took the same job with the England Women’s team. From this season, Australian Lisa Keightley will take charge of the Mumbai Indians. Former Australian legspinner Kristen Beams joined the team as spin-bowling coach.
G Kamilini, a promising young talent from India, debuted for MI Women last season as a lower-order hitter. The under-19 World Cup winner will be a force for MI Women. Since then, she has gone on to make her international debut for India in a T20 World Cup year. She was retained ahead of their three-season opener, Yastika Bhatia. Now, she is ready for greater responsibility this season.
