In the league phase of this year’s WPL, Delhi Capitals had faltered in the final over of the chase against Gujarat Giants. However, Delhi Capitals came with a different resolve under Jemima’s leadership in the eliminator. On Tuesday, they didn’t allow that to happen.
At the Kotambi Stadium, Delhi Capitals were chasing a modest total of 169. However, you need to keep in mind that this track offered low bounce. Still, Capitals chased down the target by seven wickets with even 26 balls to spare. This victory in the eliminator game means they’ve set up the meeting with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the final. This will be their fourth straight final appearance in the WPL.
Coming back to the game, the Gujarat Giants batter found it difficult early on. They were four down for just 59 runs. Thanks to Beth Mooney (62 runs) that Gujarat Giants recovered and reached a respectable total. Georgia Wareham (35) also contributed with the bat. These two stitched a partnership of 61 runs to pull the Giants out of a rut.
In response, Delhi came out all guns blazing and scored a healthy 75 for none in the first six overs. In that period, Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma displayed ferocious ball striking. In the fifth over, they hit five fours off Renuka Singh.
Georgia Wareham came in to bowl the 8th over for GG and provided some respite to her team. She dismissed both openers in the same over. At that time, DC was 92 for 2 and needed just 77 runs off 72 balls. After that, Jemima and Laura Wolvaardt took charge of taking their team home. Both played with extreme control to register a 68-run stand filled with some out-of-the-world shots from both.
Delhi had struggled against GG twice in this season, but they stuck with simple things to chase this target down with ease. This time, they weren’t even thinking about the last over. They wanted to finish the game as quickly as possible. And so they did.
