Reportedly, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has rejected the request of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to relocate their World Cup matches out of India. According to reports, the ICC has issued a stern warning to the BCB, stating that they must either play in India or forfeit their points.
Last Week, BCB formally wrote a letter to ICC, seeking to shift its upcoming T20 World Cup matches from India. They requested this for security concerns. This move from BCB comes in retaliation for BCCI instructing the Kolkata Knight Riders to release the Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their team.
Now, ESPNCricinfo reports that the ICC has rejected the BCB’s request to change the venues for Bangladesh’s games in the World Cup. They took this decision during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, January 7. After that, they informed the BCB that Bangladesh would have to play all their games in India or risk forfeiting points.
However, the report further stated that the BCB has denied receiving any such ultimatum from the global body. The virtual meeting of ICC was arranged after this request from BCB. Neither party has given any official communication about the issue.
According to the current T20 World Cup schedule, Bangladesh is slated to play its group games in India. Their first three games are to be played in Eden Gardens, Kolkata, and their last is scheduled in Mumbai.
All this comes after the BCCI has asked KKR to release Mustafizur from the IPL 2026. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia cited ‘overall developments’ as the reason behind the move. We don’t know the exact reason.
Just a day after BCCI’s decision, BCB wrote to ICC demanding that their matches be shifted from India. We don’t know more details about the matter. We’ll inform you once more details emerge. Stay tuned!
