Delhi Capitals (DC) welcome Matthew Mott to their coaching setup as assistant coach ahead of IPL 2025. He will be joined by Hemang Badani, who was hired as a new head coach last October.
Also on the coaching roster include Venugopal Rao as the director of cricket and Munaf Patel as the bowling coach, among several others. Mott is no stranger to IPL, having been an assistant coach at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the first two seasons of the tournament in 2008 and 2009.
Most recently, he is the white-ball coach for the England men’s national team, a role he vacated in July last year. Following an interim period, the reins of the national side are currently held across formats by Brendon McCullum.
During the ‘90s and early 2000s, Mott was once a cricketer for Queensland and Victoria. Post his playing career, he dived into coaching and acquired experience with both the Australian and English domestic setups.
He was the head coach of the Australian women’s national team from 2015 to 2020. After that, he left his post with the England white-ball team to join the Sydney Sixers as an assistant coach on a three-year contract last September.
Mott boasts of the rare distinction of coaching the winning teams for the Men’s World T20 and the Women’s World T20. DC, which is one of the three franchises to have partaken in all IPL seasons without winning a trophy, appointed Munaf in November under a refurbished coaching structure.
He took over from former Australia all-rounder James Hopes while Badani took the place of Ricky Ponting. The partnership of Badani, Munaf, and Rao led the Capitals franchise to win the ILT20 this year, its first-ever trophy in any men’s or women’s competition globally.
DC has reached the IPL final only once, in 2020, and was ranked sixth in IPL 2024.
