New Sixer King: Rohit Sharma Overtakes Afridi for Most Sixes in ODI History

By smashing one of the most famous milestones in limited-overs cricket, Indian captain Rohit Sharma wrote yet another amazing chapter in his career. At Ranchi during the opening ODI against South Africa, the 38-year-old launched his 352nd career six, surpassing Shahid Afridi’s 15-year record of 351 maximums.

The record-breaking hit came in the 20th over when Rohit Sharma picked up a short ball from Marco Jansen and dispatched it over deep mid-wicket with typical ease. Besides energizing the home audience, the shot emphasized how his batting development has transformed the contemporary ODI power-hitting scene.

How Did Rohit Transform Into Cricket’s Most Dominant Six-Hitter?

Becoming the most prolific six-striker in ODI cricket took Rohit Sharma on a trip far from immediate. Early in his career, the Mumbai-born batsman was better regarded for timing rather than sheer power.

Actually, his first ODI six came just in his third innings; by the time he scored his first century in 2010, he had recorded just five sixes from more than a thousand deliveries.

The change came slowly, then all at once. As he rose to open the innings, Rohit tapped into a much more aggressive rhythm. His remarkable hitting against Australia in Bengaluru, when he struck 16 sixes in one innings, a world record at the moment, was a significant turning point.

Rohit’s consistency has been amazing from then on. Having hit 352 sixes over 269 ODI innings, he averages one six approximately every 35 balls. With 232 sixes off pace, 120 against spin, many of them courtesy of his deadly pull stroke, among the most feared in modern white-ball cricket, his range is equally remarkable.

Rohit’s most current success goes far beyond mere numbers. It is proof of longevity, flexibility, and the rare capacity to master bowling attacks across generations. With Shahid Afridi‘s previously unattainable record behind him, Rohit Sharma has set a new high-water mark, one future batsmen will try to reach for years to come.
