Internal Bleeding Forces Shreyas Iyer Into ICU Following Brutal Blow in Sydney ODI

Shreyas Iyer was admitted to a Sydney hospital’s ICU due to internal bleeding

Following a serious on-field injury during the third ODI against the Australia national cricket team, India Vice Captain Shreyas Iyer is still undergoing close medical care in Sydney. The incident took place when Iyer was positioned at the backward point on the field, where he made an amazing running dive to dismiss Alex Carey. He came down awkwardly on his left side right after the catch and seemed to be in clear agony, grabbing his rib area.

First scans showed what was thought to be a rib-cage impact injury, but further testing exposed a splenic laceration with internal hemorrhage. Internal sources claim Shreyas Iyer’s condition worsened very quickly once he returned to the dressing room; his vital signs fell to dangerously low levels. As a preventive step, he was immediately transported to the hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The Indian board, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), verified that Iyer’s day-by-day development will be under supervision by the team doctor still in Sydney. The team of doctors will also be collaborating with local experts in Australia to monitor the batter. Shreyas continues to be ‘medically stable,’ but his recuperation will now take longer than first projected.

Initially, he was expected to be out of the field for around three weeks; however, the internal injury and bleeding have extended the healing time beyond that. As of now, there is no definite date expected for his return to his team and international cricket. Shreyas Iyer’s injury is a major setback for the Indian team, especially considering his appointment as the ODI vice-captain and the momentum he had achieved after fitness issues. Coaches and selectors will have to look for a backup strategy while he is in the recovery process.  While the cricketing world awaits more information, all stakeholders are advising patience and prudence, preferring total physical healing over a hurried return.
