Indian captain Shubman Gill, very politely addressed the controversial excuse of the veteran fast bowler Mohammad Shami from the Indian squad ahead of the two-test series against South Africa. While addressing the issue, Gill acknowledged Shami’s skills, along with highlighting the importance of future planning for the team.

Gill called the decision to leave Mohammad Shami out “tough” while drawing attention to the fast bowler’s proven red-ball skills and ability to change the course of games even in the Premier League.

He insisted that very few pacers “of his quality” are left in Indian cricket today. Simultaneously, Gill made it clear that there was a need to go through the younger options, taking into account the present team’s readiness for the next trips and the global formats demand.

The captain from Bengal recognized that the selectors had a difficult decision to make, keeping the old players while injecting new ones into the fast-bowling unit.

Shami, who recently suffered some injury concerns but still remains one of the most effective red-ball players in India, has been brilliant on the domestic front this season, taking 15 wickets in two matches in the Ranji Trophy, where he also claimed a five-wicket haul against Gujarat.

Nevertheless, according to Shubman Gill, selection depends more on group readiness than on individual talent; it is about being prepared. “Especially when we are going abroad, we have to plan ahead,” he said. Gill, through this change, implied that rather than personal narratives, India’s future series and their position in the World Test Championship race are of higher value.

The remarks, while acknowledging the void created by Shami, the team has faith in its current players and long-term plan, pointing to a minor change in the fast-bowling policy of India.

Gill asserted that the players chosen for the series had “done an excellent job”. As India prepares for a high-stakes home series, the captain’s message is straightforward which is to honor the past, but a fresh chapter is beginning.
