Harbhajan Singh spoke straight and honestly about his career recently on R Ashwin’s famous YouTube podcast at age 45. From his early cricket days to his retirement, he discussed a broad spectrum of issues, including the contentious incident with S Sreesanth during the first season of the IPL.
At the end of a league game in IPL 2008, Harbhajan Singh slapped Sreesanth, who was playing for Kings XI Punjab, while wearing MI colors. Consequently, the BCCI benched the spinner for the duration of the competition.
Harbhajan Singh stated during his chat with Ashwin that he would like to change in his life, the event involving his former teammate. “One thing I’d want to change in my life is that incident with Sreesanth. I want to remove that incident from my career. That is the incident I would change from my list. What transpired was wrong, and I shouldn’t have done what I did. I apologised 200 times.” (Source: The Times of India)
“What I felt so bad about was even years after that incident, I have been apologising every opportunity or stage I get.” He continued, That was a mistake. “We all err; hopefully, and strive never to repeat such mistakes. He was my comrade and we were acting jointly. Indeed, we were foes in that match. But it should not have gotten to that degree where we act so. Therefore, yes, I was the one at fault; he simply incited me, but that’s acceptable, actually. Still, my acts were wrong. I said, ‘Sorry’.”
Harbhajan Singh said further, “What wounded me still after years was when I met his daughter and was speaking to her with much love, and she declared, I don’t want to speak with you. You struck my father.” My heart was broken, and tears were about to start. I was asking myself, what impression have I left on her? She must view me in a bad light, right? She considers me the man who hit her father. I was really bad. I still say sorry to his daughter for my inability to do anything.
