Seventeen Years Later: RCB Triumph Over CSK in Historic Victory

RCB defeats Chepauk after 17 years

In the year 2008, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won by a very narrow margin of 14 runs against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk in the IPL, where they defended a total of 126 runs. Thereafter, RCB suffered badly, losing all eight matches against CSK at this venue. However, they have had a victorious run in all their four IPL matches at Chepauk against teams other than CSK.

The eight-match losing streak RCB endured against CSK at Chepauk finally ended on Friday and holds the record for the longest series of defeats for any team against a single opponent at a specific ground in IPL history.

The recent seven encounters in a row between CSK and the Delhi Capitals (DC) held in Chepauk have been won by CSK. Similarly, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have been on a roll when facing the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Hyderabad. Even the Mumbai Indians (MI) enjoyed a seven-match stupor against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Wankhede from 2013 to 2023.

The 50-run defeat CSK suffered on Friday stands as their biggest loss at home in terms of runs. Previously, the franchise had tasted defeats of more than 50 runs only twice: a bigger margin of 60 runs by MI in 2013 and a smaller 54 runs by PBKS in 2022.

Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin had a combined economy of 11.80 in the five overs they bowled on Friday, thus making it to the list of the fifth worst in T20 matches when they have collectively bowled at least five overs. Before this, the economy exceeded ten runs for them only in one T20 at Chepauk, with a worse reading of 10.66 for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) match in 2012, which they managed to win chasing a target of 206 runs.
