Which is the Worst Team in IPL History as of 2023

| Posted on May 1, 2023

Indian Premier League (IPL) has been on for nearly 16 seasons and continues to grow bigger each year.

Although 15 teams have participated in this cash-rich league, currently, only 10 teams are active. Among active teams, despite having being part of the IPL since its inception, some of them still have no trophies in their cupboards.

Even though some of these IPL franchises have the most fan following and are the , they have failed to maintain a clean win record. We can thus term them the most unsuccessful team in the IPL or the worst team in the IPL, as their trophy cabinet remains empty.

The big question is, which currently active team can be considered the worst in the IPL? As of now, Delhi Capitals have the lowest win percentage among the active teams, so they could be considered the worst team in the IPL. However, this may change in the future as the team can improve their performance in the upcoming seasons.

Today, let’s take a look at the five worst teams in IPL history that have the lowest win percentage.

Worst Team in IPL HIstory

This article presents a list of the most unsuccessful teams in IPL history based on their win percentage in the league. The numbers in this article are up to date as of the mid-2023 season.

Let’s have a look.

Delhi Capitals

With the lowest win percentage of 43.96, Delhi Capitals tops the list of worst teams in IPL winner list. Historically, they have not been performing to their fullest potential, as their roster has had some big names over the years.

David Warner, AB de Villiers, Andre Russel, Glenn Maxwell, Gautam Gambir, Virender Sehwag – you name a superstar, and Delhi have had them in their line-up with most dangerous batsman in IPL. Still, they were unable to secure a title.

Having said that, Delhi’s fortune has improved significantly in the last couple of years. Since the rebranding of the team, they have shown great potential, and we can expect a couple of trophies to come their way.

Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings holds the second spot on the list with a 45.33 win percentage. They started off well in the inaugural season of IPL in 2008, winning 66 percent of their matches. However, they lost momentum in the following seasons.

And in 2014, they topped the table with 77 win rate; this was their best season to date. Apart from that, Punjab Kings Only qualified once for the playoffs in 14 seasons.

This is a pretty low number considering they’ve had the likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Chris Gayle, Brett Lee, and KL Rahul in their team who have the highest partnership in IPL. They’ve always had decent players in this camp, but they struggled with their consistency.

They have failed to grab the best local talent, except for a few exceptions, and their foreign exports also failed to make an impact on their results.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

A team filled with superstars like Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Gayle, Anil Kumble, and KL Rahul, should not be on this list, but they are and have only won 46.83 percent of their matches.

They’ve always had batting superstars, which makes them one of the most dangerous teams in the IPL. However, they have consistently lacked quality Indian bowling options.

As a result, they are unable to win the matches in the closing stages of the league, earning them the tag of IPL chokers. While they have qualified for 5 playoffs and played in 3 finals, they have failed to secure any Trophies.

In the last couple of years, RCB’s Indian pacers, including Mohammad Siraj and Harshal Patel, have started to perform consistently for the team.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

They started their IPL journey in 2013 and quickly developed a loyal fan base. At the start, they were one of the best-performing teams in the league, even winning the title in 2016 by defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

However, since then, they’ve lost momentum and an overall decrease in the win percentage followed. Currently, they have a win percentage of 47.50, and it is not looking great ahead.

They suffered a staggering loss of 11 matches out of 14, in the 2021 season. Which was their worst season to date and that is something they ought to rectify in the future.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals is the fifth worst team in IPL, however, they started their IPL journey with a bang.

RR won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008 when Shane Warne led a young team to glory. They’ve never been able to replicate that performance from the first season. In Fact, they’ve only been an average team in the IPL, which shows in their win rate.

To rectify this, they chopped and changed too many parts in their setup and this led to inconsistency in the team. From captains to members, there were too many changes, and relied too heavily on foreign players.

As a result, they currently have a win percentage of 48.51, making them the fifth-worst team in the IPL.

Concluding Remarks

While the IPL has seen some teams deliver extraordinary performances and consistent results, others struggled to find success in this league.

Until now, Delhi Capitals could be termed as the worst team in the league.  However, this may change in the upcoming seasons.

A couple of good seasons can do wonders for the win rate of any team on this list, including the Delhi Capitals.

Keep supporting your team and their members to boost their confidence, so they strive to do better for their fans.
