Late Entry Drama: Zaheer Khan’s Phone Call Secured Shardul Thakur’s IPL Spot

Shardul Thakur credits Zaheer Khan for last-minute IPL 2025

Shardul Thakur, who can be termed an all-rounder, talked about how important it is to go through the hard times, looking back to his return in IPL 2025. Indeed, there were many raised eyebrows concerning not being present in the winner’s name after the IPL mega auction, but in the end, none of the franchises came forward to buy this versatile player, who has already created a name for himself in the league.

Later he was actually contracted by the Lucknow Super Giants as a replacement for injured Mohsin Khan. In a bizarre turn of fate, Shardul is leading LSG’s meagre bowling resources in the IPL 2025’s opening two games. He only bowled two overs in LSG’s defeat against Delhi Capitals in Vizag, but on Thursday, March 27, added significantly against SunRisers Hyderabad, allowing LSG to restrict their wonderfully flamboyant batting lineup.

Shardul took four scalps in his full quota of four overs and helped restrict Lucknow’s total to a measly figure of 190 at a ground where scores above 200 have become pretty frequent. He brought down the SunRisers’ top order by cleaning up big hitters Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan on back-to-back balls in the third over. He later piled on Abhinav Manohar and Mohammed Shami to his list.

After his possibly game-winning performance, Shardul Thakur spoke to the broadcasters about how much a call from Zaheer Khan played a role in him getting a bid for IPL 2025.

“It was a disappointing day during the auction. No franchise picked me. But such things happen in cricket. There were some inquiries about joining different camps, but LSG was the first to reach out, so I prioritized them. Working closely with Zaheer Khan, he called me, and I had to accept,” Shardul shared.

“As I always say, the skills and talent are there. It’s all about the performances. You must be ready to face challenging days in cricket,” he concluded.
