In the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008, the tournament only had 8 teams, all competing fiercely to make it a success. Rajasthan Royals, the first IPL winner, had a pretty great team with an even more impressive and experienced captain in Shane Warne.
The final match, held between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, was a thrilling encounter that captivated cricket fans worldwide. Chennai Super Kings posted a challenging total of 163/5 in 20 overs. In response, Rajasthan Royals showcased their mettle and chased down the target with three wickets remaining with the highest partnership between their players. The second edition of the IPL, held in 2009, took place in South Africa due to the general election in India. Despite the change in location, the competition remained fierce and engaging, and two new teams reached the finals, showcasing their remarkable skills and determination.
IPL 2009 final match was held between Deccan Chargers and Royal Challengers Bangalore. In a display of top-notch cricketing talent, both teams put forth their best efforts to claim the championship title. Ultimately, Deccan Chargers came out on top and won the tournament. The final match in the third season of the IPL saw a clash between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians in Mumbai. Opting to bat first, Chennai put up a commendable total of 168 runs for the loss of five wickets. Mumbai Indians, however, struggled to chase down the target in 20 overs and only managed 146 runs.
Chennai came out on top by a good margin, ultimately lifting the IPL 2010 trophy. This was the first IPL win in finals for Chennai Super Kings, their success story continued in the subsequent seasons with more wins. Additionally, Sachin Tendulkar scored the most runs (612) in the season to claim the Orange Cap, while Pragyan Ojha got the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker.
The 2011 season also saw a similar narrative unfolding in the IPL final, but this time Chennai was up against the mighty Royal Challengers Bangalore. While batting first, Chennai posted a mammoth total of 205 runs on the scoreboard. The Royal Challengers Bangalore faced a challenging task in their pursuit but could only muster 147 runs in their 20 overs for the loss of eight wickets.
Once again, Chennai emerged triumphant in an IPL final match, showcasing their prowess and consistency in high-pressure situations. On the best performers front, Chris Gayle got an Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer in the tournament and Lasith Malinga got the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker.
Continuing their remarkable streak, Chennai Super Kings made it to the IPL final for the third consecutive season. This time around, Chennai was pitted against Kolkata Knight Riders. While batting first, Chennai did everything they could and posted a significant total of 190/3 in 20 overs.
But it wasn’t written in the stars for Chennai as the Kolkata team showed great strength under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir and scaled down the huge mountain to claim the first IPL win in the finals for their team. Additionally, this edition of IPL saw Chris Gayle snatch the Orange Cap as the highest run scorer and Morne Morkel snatch the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker.
Continuing their great performances, Chennai again found themselves in the IPL finals against Mumbai Indians. This time around, the final witnessed a low scoring final when Mumbai achieved 148 runs by losing 9 wickets in 20 overs in the first innings. However, Chennai faced a tough challenge in their innings and could only muster 125 runs in their stipulated 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians held up the IPL trophy for the first time under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. In this edition, Michael Hussy got the Orange Cap and Morne Morkel got the Purple Cap.
The culmination of the 2014 IPL season saw an electrifying final clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab. In a high-scoring encounter, Kolkata successfully chased down a huge target of 200 runs this season as well in the final match. Despite considering one of the worst team in IPL history KKR played well and Manish Pandey made a scintillating 94 runs off just 50 balls.
In their second IPL final, they came out guns blazing and made a shorthand of the target. This season saw Robin Uthappa winning the Orange Cap for the highest run scorer and Mohit Sharma winning the Purple Cap for the highest wicket-taker.
In IPL 2015, Rohit Sharma had matured as a captain and marshaled his troops to another victory for the team. This engaging IPL season saw another gripping final between two giants in IPL, Chennai Super Kings, and Mumbai Indians.
In the climactic final, Mumbai posted an imposing target of 202 runs, setting the stage for a tense battle. However, Chennai fought with all they got, but that wasn’t enough to win the contest, in the end, Chennai could only manage 161 runs. In this entertaining season of IPL, David Warner got the Orange Cap as the highest run scorer and Dwayne Bravo got the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker.
In the 9th edition of IPL, the ever-so-complete Sunrisers Hyderabad emerged as the champions against a Virat Kohli-led formidable Royal Challengers Bangalore. Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad scored a mountain of 208/7 runs, an almost impossible task for any team.
In response, Royal Challengers Bangalore started pretty well with Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli but they kept losing wickets at crucial intervals. In the end, RCB could only manage 200 runs for the fall of 7 wickets. Furthermore, Virat Kohli, the King of IPL, on the back of exceptional performance earned the Orange Cap as the highest run-scorer, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s commendable bowling earned him the coveted Purple Cap.
In the tenth edition of IPL, Mumbai Indians scripted history by becoming the first team to clinch the IPL championship for the third time. They achieved this unique distinction under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
In a tightly contested final characterized by low scoring, Mumbai batted first and made a modest total of 129 runs for the loss of eight wickets. However, their bowlers exhibited excellent skills and restricted the Rising Pune Supergiants to 128/6 in 20 overs. Winning by a margin of 1 run Mumbai made history and emerged victorious in the tournament. In this edition of IPL, David Warner scored a ton of runs and won the Orange Cap, while Bhuvneshvar Kumar emerged as the Purple Cap winner.
The final showdown of the 2018 edition of IPL was played between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad in Wankhede Stadium Mumbai. Sunrisers Hyderabad took to the crease first and scored a modest total of 178/6 in their 20 overs. However, Chennai was too good on the day and easily managed to get over the line in just 18.3 overs.
This was the third IPL win for Chennai Super Kings as well, making them the second team after Mumbai Indians, to Achieve this remarkable feat. In this season of IPL, Kane Williamson showcased brilliant form and earned Orange Cap, and on the bowling front, Andrew Tye showcased his talents and picked up the Purple Cap as the highest wicket-taker.
Mumbai Indians saw another victory in IPL 2019 as they defeated Chennai Super Kings by 1 run. Mumbai Indians confronted Chennai Super Kings in the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium Hyderabad in a low-scoring encounter.
The Mumbai team has a habit of winning low-scoring encounters, they won the IPL 2017 just like this. Mumbai batted first and only managed to get to a low total of 149 runs. Chennai started well with Shane Watson and Faf Du Plessis at the helm but lost their way in the final overs. Eventually, they lost the final by a margin of just 1 run.
Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, there were changes in plans for IPL 2020, relocating the tournament to UAE from September to November. This was the most successful season for Mumbai Indians as they won the tournament for a record fifth time.
Batting first, Delhi scored 156/7 in their allotted 20 overs, a commendable total, given the nature of the pitch they were playing. But Mumbai had other ideas and decided to go all guns blazing in the powerplay to give their team a good start. In the end, Mumbai chased down the target in just 18.4 overs. KL Rahul was adjudged the Orange Cap holder for his 670 runs in the season and Kagiso Rabada was awarded the Purple Cap for his 30 wickets in the season.
By defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2021, Chennai Super Kings became the second franchise to win the title for the fourth time after Mumbai Indians.
Chennai put up a strong performance in the first innings to register 192 on the scoreboard. Faf Du Plessis put up a great show by contributing 86 runs in just 59 balls. In response, Kolkata started well but could not achieve their target of 193 to register a victory.
In the IPL 2022, BCCI introduced two new teams in the tournament, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. Eventually, Gujarat Titans won the tournament comfortably with Hardik Pandya leading from the front.
In the IPL 2022 final, played between Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, Rajasthan could only muster 130 runs in their allotted 20 overs. A pretty low target for Gujarat Titans, which they achieved with 11 balls to spare without flinching much. This edition of the tournament saw Jos Buttler rack up 863 runs in 17 innings and ended up winning Orange Cap, and Yuzvendra Chahal with 27 wickets was awarded the Purple Cap.
Gujarat Titans reached their second consecutive IPL final but this time they were facing Chennai Super Kings, the undisputed champions. The final was a rain-marred match which finished in three days. When they got to play the match, Gujarat Titans finished with a mammoth total of 214 runs on the scoreboard.
In response, Chennai boys, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway started pretty well with 74/1 in 6.3 overs. The match was shortened due to rain, and the revised target was 171 runs in 15 overs. In the end, Ravindra Jadeja brought Chennai to victory with scintillating power hitting. Shubman Gill was awarded the Orange Cap for 890 runs and Mohammad Shami was awarded the Purple Cap for 28 wickets.
