On 20^th April 2024, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma went on a mission to punish every ball they faced. In the first six overs, they hit 11 sixes, 13 fours, and six singles. The combined strike rate of the team was 344.44. 

In the end, Head finished the powerplay on 84 off just 26 balls. Abhishek scored 40 off just 10 balls. Both batsmen created the record for the highest powerplay score in IPL. 

2. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 107/0 – Hyderabad

The second-highest score in powerplay in IPL is also registered to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). 2024 was a good season for SRH as they created many records. The SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma played a batting masterclass at Hyderabad. 

Chasing a target of 166 runs, they were aggressive in the first few overs to set the tone. They ended up scoring 107 runs in powerplay and winning the match inside 10 overs. Both batsmen hit 8 sixes and 13 fours combined. 

3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 105/0 – Bengaluru

Kolkata Knight Riders Openers Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine played blinders to help their team reach 105 in just six overs. 

On May 7, 2017, KKR was chasing an average target of 159 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. By the end of the powerplay, Sunil Narine had scored 54 runs off just 16 balls and reached his half-century in just 15 balls. It is among the fastest fifties in IPL. 

Chris Lynn on the other hand scored 49 off just 20 balls. The pair also collected 8 sixes during their innings. 

4. Chennai Super Kings – 100/2 – Wankhede

Chennai holds the record for fourth highest score in IPL powerplay. Back in 2014, the Chennai Super Kings set the record for the highest powerplay score in IPL history with their superlative effort against a tough side. Virender Sehwag scored a century and helped Punjab make 232 runs. 

In response, Suresh Raina launched a counterattack and played some of the most creative cricket shots of his entire life. He scored 87 runs in just 25 deliveries in the powerplay. CSK amassed 100 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in the powerplay.

5. Punjab Kings – 93/1 – Kolkata

IPL 2024 has been a batting season where batters broke many records for fun. Here is another powerplay highest score in IPL by Punjab Kings. KKR scored a massive target of 261 runs. 

The Punjab team came out firing in the powerplay. The Punjab openers Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow smashed every delivery and helped their team to 93/1 in six overs. Eventually, Punjab chased down the target in just 19 overs. Jonny ended up scoring a century and taking his team home. 

6. Delhi Capitals – 92/0 – Delhi

Another record-breaking IPL 2024 match was played between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. The Delhi openers Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel started the innings with a bang. They helped Delhi set the highest powerplay score in the IPL for their team. However, the team comes in the list of most unsuccessful teams in the IPL. Yet, this performance was outstanding. 

Fraser-McGurk did most of the heavy lifting within the powerplay and scored a compelling 78 runs in just 24 balls with the help of 11 fours and 5 sixes. Their team ended up scoring 257 runs in 20 overs. Mumbai also put up a good fight but eventually, Delhi won the match by 10 runs. 

7. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 92/1 – Bengaluru

On the number 7, we have Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). This is another highest powerplay score in IPL 2024. Though, the team has the lowest score in the Indian Premier league. In this match, RCB was chasing down an average target of 148. However, Virat Kohli (the King of IPL) and Faf du Plessis did not hold back in the powerplay. 

Both openers came out with an intent to destroy Gujarat Bowling. Faf scored 64 off just 23 balls including 10 fours and 3 sixes. Virat also scored 28 runs including 4 sixes in just 12 balls. The aggressive RCB won the match within 14 overs. 

8. Chennai Super Kings – 90/0 – Wankhede

In 2015, the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai was set ablaze by the carnage of Chennai batters. Chasing a decent target of 183, Chennai batters came out with an intent to chase it down as early as possible. 

Dwayne Smith and Brandon McCullum smashed 90 runs in the powerplay as Malinga and Harbhajan Singh conceded 61 runs between the fourth and sixth overs. They scored the highest runs in powerplay in IPL. The start by both openers helped CSK chase down the target with 20 balls to spare. 

9. Kolkata Knight Riders – 88/1 – Visakhapatnam

The IPL 2024 is a recurring theme in this list because of all the carnage we’ve seen in the last season. The team in this ninth spot with the highest score in IPL powerplay is Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). KKR started quickly and hammered 88 runs in the powerplay for the loss of one wicket. 

Sunil Narine was unstoppable in that inning as he finished the power play with 52 runs off just 21 balls. KKR smoked Delhi in that match as they scored 272/7 in 20 overs.

10. Delhi Capitals – 88/2 – Delhi

The last team on this list of the highest powerplay scores in the IPL is Delhi Capitals. Once again, Delhi batters Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abishek Porel proved their mettle while chasing a mammoth target of 266 runs. 

Fraser-McGurk scored 46 off just 13 balls with the help of 5 fours and 4 sixes. Abhishek Porel scored 21 off 15 balls. However, this start wasn’t enough for Delhi to end up on the winning side. They could only manage 199 runs in the end.
